How to remove scuff marks from parquet flooring

Parquet flooring is made up of multiple smaller pieces of wood with different grains. When it’s kept in pristine condition, parquet can look stunning in any home. However, scuffs can happen from time-to-time, spoiling the look.
Here are some suggestions on how to shift scuff marks from your parquet floor

Remove dust

First of all, vacuum the floor to get rid of any dust and debris. Use a damp sponge mop to finish off.

Use an eraser

A standard pencil eraser will work well to remove any small black scuff marks left on the flooring by shoes. Simply rub the eraser over the scuff marks, and then wipe over the area to reveal the clean floor                                                            beneath and remove any eraser shavings.
Use a rubber-soled shoe

For larger scuffs, take a trainer or squash shoe with a light-coloured, no-marking sole. Use a modest amount of pressure to rub the heel of the shoe along the scuff mark, and then clean the area as described above.

Use a tennis ball

Tennis balls are brilliant for shifting scuff marks because of their lightly abrasive fabric covering. All you need to do is use the tennis ball like a sponge to remove the scuff mark.

Use toothpaste

If the scuff marks are proving stubborn to shift, you need to up the ante and use toothpaste. Toothpaste contains tiny granules that have a mild, exfoliating action. Place a small amount of toothpaste on a damp sponge and rub over the scuff mark, using a very light pressure, until the mark has gone.

Take a clean, damp cloth and wipe away any residual toothpaste. Buff the parquet with a commercial cleaning product or a light wax to restore the shine.

Professional restoration

If you have a large area of parquet flooring that has been badly and extensively scuffed and scratched, it may be advisable to hire a firm of floor sanding contractors to have the whole parquet floor area restored.

Once the work has been completed and the floor looks as good as new, you can prevent further damage by placing mats in front of entry doors and requesting that visitors remove their outdoor shoes before walking on the parquet.
